New LinkedIn Follow button for companies

LinkedIn have added the option for companies to embed a ‘Follow’ button specifically for their company. If you’re logged in to LinkedIn and click on it’ll act just like the Facebook Like button – so you’ll be following that company instantly. If you’re not logged in then it’ll popup an prompt you to do so.

According to Econsultancy, 70% of the users LinkedIn surveyed said they’d follow a company. A further 60% said they wanted news and updates from any company they did decide to follow.

But cookies spoil the fun (again)

As with most other social buttons these days, it’ll use cookies to detect if you’re logged in and given half a chance it’ll drop them on your machine like a drunken fairy sprinkling magic dust.

That means that any company in the UK taking the ‘cookie law’ seriously (and you probably should) probably won’t be able to use this.

Whilst many smaller companies may be hiding behind the parapet waiting to see what happens, larger companies are tasking teams of people to audit sites and remove invasive or unnecessary cookies so they’re prepared for May 25th.

Adding a button that’ll track their visitors is likely not to appeal.
